PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand
Committee MT/9, Metal Finishing, at the request of industry.
The objective of the Standard is to provide test procedures and performance requirements
for powder-coated metal products, other than aluminium products intended for
architectural applications. Requirements for products for use in architectural applications
are contained in AS 3715—1989, Metal finishing—Thermoset powder coatings for
architectural applications.
Currently there are no international (ISO) standards on the subject.
During the preparation of this Standard, cognizance was taken of the British Standard,
BS 6497:1984, Specification for powder organic coatings for application and stoving to
hot-dip galvanized hot-rolled steel sections and preformed steel sheet for windows and
associated external architectural purposes, and for the finish on galvanized steel sections
and preformed sheet coated with powder organic coatings.
The terms ‘normative’ and ‘informative’ have been used in this Standard to define the
application of the appendix to which they apply. A ‘normative’ appendix is an integral
part of a Standard, whereas an ‘informative’ appendix is only for information and
guidance.
