Many different types of finishes may be applied to metal surfaces by coil coating. These finishes include paints, whose properties are strongly influenced by the resins used in the formulation, and plastic films that may be laminated to the metal strip.
Alkyds are the condensation product of polybasic acids and polyhydric alcohols (polyls). Chemically, alkyds are polyesters, but alkyds are formulated with drying or non-drying oils while polyester are oil-free. Coatings based on alkyd resins tend to be relatively low cost but exhibit poor durability. Alkyd resins are often modified with other resins to obtain specific properties.
Amine alkyd finishes are also referred to as alkyd/amino types. An amine or amino resin is the alkylated reaction product of urea or melamine and formaldehyde. The alkyd is cross-linked by the amino resin during baking.
Silicone alkyd coating are based on either the reaction product of a silicone intermediate and an alkyd resin, or a cold blend of silicone resin and compatible alkyd resin. Silicone alkyds are generally cross-linked with amino resins. They have improved exterior durability.
Acrylics are synthetic resins made from derivatives of acrylic acid. Thermoplastic acrylics (lacquers ), thermosetting acrylics, and acrylic latexes are available; the latter two are used in coil coating.
Thermoset acrylic coating are based on resins prepared from acrylic and methacrylic esters, acrylic and methacrylic acids, and /or styrene. They contain one or more functional group such as amide, hydroxy, or carboxy. They are cross-linked with themselves, amino, or epoxy resins. Acrylics may also be modified with other resins.
Silicone acrylic resins can be either the reaction product of a silicone intermediate with acrylic monomers, or a cold blend of silicone resin and acrylic polymers.

Polyester resins are the condensation products of polybasic acids and polyols. Polyesters are sometimes refereed to as oil-free alkyds. Silicone polyesters resins are the reaction product of organo-siloxane intermediates and a suitable polyester resin intermediate (typically characterized by the absence of drying oils ). These resins are generally cross-linked with amino resins. Coil coating made from silicone-modified polyester resins are often referred to as SMPs.
Vinyl resins are available to coil coaters in several forms.

Solution vinyl coating are based on copolymers or terpolymers of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, and other monomers. Solution vinyl are thermoplastic, but some cross-linking may be accomplished when reactive groups are present.
Vinyl alkyd coatings are based on the blend of a copolymer ( or more commonly terpolymer ) of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, and vinyl alcohol with a compatible alkyd resin. These are thermoplastic coatings, but may approach the performance of thermosetting coatings by the incorporation of amino resins. The amino resin will cross-link not only the alkyd but the hydroxyl portion of the vinyl terpolymer.
Plastisol coatings are dispersions of finely divided higher molecular weight polyvinyl chloride resins in plasticizers. During the baking process the finely divided resin particles dissolve in the plasticizers. These particles fuse into a tough, flexible plastic film on cooling. Solvent can be added to plastisol coating to lower the viscosity, producing organosol coatings.
Epoxy are synthetic resins formed by reactions of compounds containing epoxy groups. The most common epoxies are those made from the reaction of bisphenol A with epichlorohyrin. These resins are typically cross-linked with amino or phenolic resins.
Epoxy ester coatings are based on resins prepared by the esterfication of an epoxy resin with fatty acids. Because of their excellent adhesion to metals, epoxies are widely used as primers.
Fluoropolymer-based coatings are usually based on a dispersion of finely-divided resin particles in dispersants and diluents.
